Microsoft Security Update released 20.11.09

Over the past week many of you have been in touch with us to let us know the your software was suddenly behaving strangely - that your worksheets 'danced' or 'whizzed' when the model calculated.
Following some considerable investigation we found that the phenomenon is the result of a Microsoft security update that was released on November 10th.
This is the first time in a very long history of financial modelling in Excel that we have found a Microsoft update to affect the functionality of the software so dramatically.
Although the problem does not affect the underlying integrity of your data, it will make further work on the model less pleasant.
We expect this to affect users of Excel 2002 and above who have Windows Live Update enabled or have downloaded the update manually.
We have now solved the problem, and have released a new version of Cashflow Wizard (3.0.03).
We would also be happy to fix the individual models of any customers who have purchased a release code and are in the middle of creating their financial forecast.

Release code generator updated 09.11.09

It is no longer possible to automatically purchase release codes for versions of Cashflow Wizard pre-dating the 3.0.03 release. If you have already started using an earlier version and would like to purchase a release code, we will be happy to supply you with one via email - just purchase online and contact support@decisioncurve.com with your order number. However, we strongly recommend that you download a more recent version in order to take advantage of the recent software updates.

What kind of help do you need?

I’m new to financial forecasting and I want a quick overview of the basics.

Cashflow Wizard is designed to be used by professionals from every background and does not require any training or previous experience of financial forecasting. However, if you’re interested in getting a better understanding of the principles which underpin the process, there a number of good online resources you can draw on. Visit our Support Links page for details.
If you downloaded a Cashflow Wizard model from our website, the zip file will have included a ‘Getting Started’ PDF, which introduces the basic functions of the software. For a more detailed, step-by-step guide to creating a forecast, visit our Tutorials Page.

I’ve created a basic forecast, but now I want to get more out of my Cashflow Wizard model.

If you have something specific in mind that you’d like to model, but don’t know how, the best place to start looking may be our FAQs page. You can quickly search both these resources by using the ‘Search the Decision Curve Knowledgebase’ box on the right of this page. However, if you‘d just like a general introduction to some of the more advanced ways our software can be applied, then visit the Tutorials Page.

I’m getting unexpected outputs and want to know if the software is working properly.

Cashflow Wizard models contains an average of 20,000 checksums, which constantly monitor the integrity of the workbook, its formulas and the validity of the data put into it. When a problem occurs the Cashflow Wizard software will alert you. You can check the status of the checksums at any time by navigating to Outputs > Other information > Checksums. If any of the values are False and have turned red, consult the FAQ entry titled What should I do if I have a checksum error?’. However, if all the checksums are True, then you can have confidence that the output values are correct. Unexpected values can occur due to the complex nature of some forecasting methods, i.e. although Cashflow Wizard is meant to be used by everybody, some of the maths involved requires some grounding in financial forecasting to be understood thoroughly. Browse our FAQs section to search for your specific issue or contact us using the form to the left.

There is a software problem (menus and navigation) or I’m getting error messages.

Whilst the financial workings of your Excel model do not require software to function, there is also software that assists you in getting around the sheets and performing other general functions. If Cashflow Wizard encounters a problem in this user software, you may be asked to save an error log file and send it to support@decisioncurve.com. If you click ‘yes’, an encrypted .log file will be saved in the same directory as the Cashflow Wizard workbook. Attach this to an email and send it to support@decisioncurve.com, and we will endeavour to solve the issue as quickly as we can. In the event that you receive a Microsoft Excel error message (without a Cashflow Wizard logo or request to create a log file), please email support@decisioncurve.com with details of the action being attempted. However, this is likely to be an issue with other add-ins or other third-party software running in the Excel environment.
